The Bates Homestead
Katy and Greg Bates's four-year-old garden is home to bees and chickens. A greenhouse made of recycled doors and recently expanded veggie beds have allowed them to offer a weekly produce box.
In our food garden
We plant our garden following the moon phases for leaves, fruit, and roots. Any plant we can get to germinate is a success. Carrots have been a nemesis for so long, and we've finally been rewarded with a crop worth eating.
Standout sustainable practices
Katy designed the garden using permaculture principles. Our passive water harvesting system of swales (berms and ditches) recharges the natural water cycle and supports the soil profile essential for growth.
We're letting nature function uninterrupted and chemical-free. We're restoring the soil-mineral cycle with compost and mulch to have healthy living soils and increase biodiversity.
Top tip for novice gardeners
Love your soil, don't treat it like dirt. Plant lots of seeds.
