Mini Farm
Veronica and David Mitchell’s 5,800-square-metre property features a five-year-old, 900-square-metre productive garden. The garden includes native plantings designed to encourage wildlife and minimise water use, a cottage garden that provides colour through the winter months, and a veggie patch.
In our food garden
We have pears, apricots, nectarines, peaches, cherries, apples, figs, plums, avocado, pomegranate, lemons, mandarins, oranges, cumquat, feijoa in the orchard. We also have passionfruit on the chicken run and hope to have kiwifruit by January. In the veggie patch, we grow pumpkin, potato, tomato, watermelon, onion, garlic, carrot, silverbeet, warrigal greens, beans, peas, corn, asparagus, capsicum, eggplant, zucchini, blueberries, raspberries, loganberries, parsley, mint, rosemary, coriander, basil and thyme.
Standout sustainable practices
We compost our house and garden green waste and use tank water for the gardens. We avoid chemical sprays and use more natural methods such as old beer for snails and chickens to patrol the perimeter to greatly reduce pests. We also have many native birds, native bees and frogs which help us in the garden.
Top tip for novice gardeners
Get started, it doesn’t have to be landscaped or perfect to grow well.
